COMPETE 25 Mentoring

COMPETE’s early-career mentoring is an important element of the COMPETE program, helping students build the kind of “professional capital” critical to starting and building a career in tech.

Mentoring Resources

As a COMPETE mentor, you will:

  • Meet (virtually) with your student for 1-2 hours per month from early February through early June.

  • Review your student’s resume

  • Conduct some mock interviewing to help your student build and refine their interview skills

  • Offer insights into what the professional work environment is like - and how to succeed in it

Mentoring FAQs

  • STEMatch asks for “light” mentoring, ~2 hours per month with the student, preferably split into two sessions (or more). Set the days/times that are convenient for you.

We ask mentors to work with students through May, but many continue longer based on mentor and student choice.

  • Yes - that is correct. Students are paired with mentors prior to the internship interview process, which maximizes the amount of support the students receive.

  • Check out the STEMatch Mentoring Topics resource for specific guidance on ways to approach your mentoring conversations.
