COMPETE 25 Mentoring
Learn about what is expected of mentors, and the areas in which they should focus. Your staff volunteering as mentors will be assigned a student to mentor who may or may not end up interning at your company, shortly after the Company Partner Kickoff.
How much time are mentors expected to spend with students?
STEMatch asks for “light” mentoring, 1-2 hours per month with the student, preferably split into two session. Set the days/times that are convenient for you.
What should we focus on in our discussions?
If we are an internship partner, our Mentee(s) might not be our interns?
Yes, that is correct. Mentees are assigned prior to all of the interns being hired, so that we can maximize the amount of mentoring the students receive.
Please help the students build “social capital”. Most are unfamiliar with the environment and norms of a workplace like yours. Many don’t understand the value of networking, and how to go about getting and succeeding at a tech job. We work through these issues in skills seminars, and your mentoring will help us drive those learnings home. Share what your days look like, how you interact with other staff, how you work with management, what project teams look like, etc.
